Sheep

For many years the sheep, and more particularly Merino  wool industry was the backbone of the Coonamble economy. Stations such as Wingadee, Calga, Nebea and many others were large runs that each year sheared tens of thousands of sheep each. While the fortunes of the wool industry declined over time the end of the reserve price scheme for wool in 1991 marked a low point for the industry. Since then the Merino remains but british breeds such as Border Leicester and Dorset, while not new to the area, increased in popularity due to the returns of the prime lamb market.

At the Coonamble Show Sheep Pavilion you can see these breeds and others on display. Run your had through a Merino fleece and see why its sort after for garment making all over the world. Walk through the prime lamb pens and see the animals whose meat is exported globally. Meet some of the proud producers who spend their lives raising and breeding these animals and talk to them about what it takes to produce and continually improve what is already one of Australia's greatest exports.
